I need your help

I'm getting this one ready for drawing class.  It is near completion but I need your critique.  Please help!  I'm looking for technical corrections.  Thanks in advance!

  1. Hi Kate - your image size is too small for critiquing - plus it has been either scanned or photographed so that too will affect how it looks. Secondly what was the purpose of your assignment? To faithfully reproduce a photo, or to create a drawing from a photo (two very different things, believe me!)? The only thing I can offer is that you have captured the two girls interaction very well, but apart from their clothes it all seems a bit middle toney - their skin tones are almost the same as the background; their hair colours are virtually identical, which reduces considerably the impact of your point of focus - the gaze between the two girls. Make your darks DARK and keep your lights light and use this to create drama in the image.

  2. Hi Kate. I'm uncomfortable critiquing somebody I don't know as I feel too critical, but, I agree with curious crow about darkening the darks. The girl in white: her glasses probably need a shadow of some sort somewhere? I'd also recommend you look at the drawing in a mirror, which is my favorite way to find the flaws I've missed.

  3. The hair on the girl with her back to us is gorgeous by the way. And I agree about the interaction - well captured.

  4. Wonderful work on the portraits; the features are beautiful and the hair is gorgeous. Now, cast shadows? I am all for contrast of light and shadows. I agree with Jenna that the young lady facing us needs some cast shadows from the glasses and maybe her hair. I would also darken the background a bit around the veils to give some contrast. Good luck with your assignment.
